Both men were terribly thirsty. As they drank from the same well, one used a golden cup, while the other used an earthen one. The former felt himself noble and prosperous; the latter saw himself as humble and poor. The first found fleeting satisfaction in vanity, while the second sank into needless worry. Yet neither remembered that what they truly needed was the water itself, not the vessel that held it. If you harbor no greed, others cannot tempt you; if you bear no hatred, they cannot wound you; if you cling to nothing with blind passion, they cannot deceive you. In the end, this world is but the inner landscape of each individual: when your heart is clear, the world becomes pure; when your mind is simple, the world grows hard to complicate.
